In 2017, a group formed among the laypeople of our local parishes, impassioned to bring an authentically Catholic concert to Duluth. The vision was to create an event that would inspire people of all faith backgrounds to better understand and appreciate the beauty of the Catholic faith. The fruit of much prayer and planning was Built Upon a Rock Fest, a free outdoor Catholic concert held on the grounds of the Cathedral in Duluth on September 17, 2017.
The vision was realized through the generous contributions of 22 parishes from across MN, 15 local organizations as sponsors, and a number of individual donors. The inaugural event drew in over 900 people, young and old, Catholic and non-Catholic, from across the Diocese of Duluth and surrounding area. The audience enjoyed free food and live musical performances from nationally known Catholic artists, all with the backdrop of beautiful Lake Superior. The music was uplifting and inspiring. Many were encouraged in their faith and led to a deeper love of Jesus Christ and His Church.
After discernment, and in response to overwhelmingly positive feedback, the Built Upon a Rock Fest team believes it is God’s will for the concert to occur annually. With faith in God, they are continuing to plan for future years, with their core vision/mission remaining the same...to provide a simple concert, free and open to the public, that will inspire people of all faith backgrounds to better understand and appreciate the beauty of the Catholic faith. The ultimate goal is to lead every person into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. The team will remain unprofitable servants in this endeavor for as long as the Lord wills it.
